This guide will show you how to find domain DNS records and detail what each record is responsible for.

There are a few different tools that can be used to search for domain records, the one we tend to recommend is Silent Push as it provides both current and historic records.

You'll need to create an account before accessing their domain tools but the free plan includes more than enough API calls per month for our needs.

Once logged in you should see a search bar, enter a domain and press search, this will then find the domain and list records that are / have been active at some point.

Current records will show a green dot next to them while old records will show red dots, you'll also see first and last seen boxes that will help you narrow down the timeline of an ip addresses use.
Step 2: Important Records
  • A Records osamweb.com 77.95.113.55
  • CNAME Records www osamweb.com
  • MX Records osamweb.com aspmx.l.google.com
  • Nameservers ns1.osamweb.com ns2.osamweb.com

The most important record type is A as this tells us where the domain is currently pointing, in the example above we can see the address 77.95.113.55 which is one of the OSAM cloud servers.

Next to A records in importance are the nameserver records, these tell us where the domains DNS records are managed/hosted and so any changes will need to be made on that platform. In the example above the namservers point to osamweb.com so we know that our server is in control of these records.
